Frequently Asked Questions

 Assessments

  • We will clarify this in the initial parent/self consultation.

If previous testing has been completed, repeating certain tests may not be appropriate. The assessment plan and fee will be adjusted accordingly.

If further assessment is required, this will be discussed and will incur additional costs.

  • Usually within 4-6 weeks of the final assessment session. Reports are only released once full payment has been made.

    • School or university accommodations

    • NDIS applications (depending on criteria)

    • Therapy or educational planning

  • For children:

    • Use simple, positive language: “You’ll be doing different activities and puzzles — just try your best.”

    • Bring snacks, a drink, and a comfort item if helpful.

    • Ensure your child is rested and has eaten.

    • We schedule children’s assessments in the morning when attention is usually the strongest.

    For adults:

    • Bring any previous reports or relevant documents.

    • A good night’s rest and a breakfast or lunch beforehand can help with focus.

    • Breaks will be provided as needed.

  • The cost of an assessment varies depending on what is required for your individual situation. Factors such as the type of assessment, the number of sessions needed, previous testing, and the level of reporting or liaison involved can all influence the final fee.

Because each assessment is tailored, fees are not one-size-fits-all. Approximate fees are listed on the Assessments page.

To receive an accurate fee estimate for your needs, please contact us directly.

We are happy to guide you through the options and help you understand what may be required.

Therapy

  • People come to see a psychologist for all sorts of reasons—there’s no “right” or “wrong” time. You might consider booking if:

    • You’re feeling anxious, stressed, or down, and it’s hard to cope on your own.

    • Your child is struggling with emotions, behaviour, or friendships.

    • Life changes (like parenting, loss, or big transitions) feel overwhelming.

    • You want to build confidence, resilience, or healthier coping strategies.

    • You just feel “stuck” and want some support moving forward.

Some people come when things feel really tough, while others come earlier—simply to have a safe space to talk and learn new tools. If you’ve been wondering whether therapy might help, that’s already a good sign it could be worth reaching out.

  • You can complete the online enquiry form or email me directly (hello@appsychology.com.au) and I will get back to you within 3 business days.

If you are an existing client, you may book further appointments here.

  • The first session is really about getting to know each other. We’ll talk about what brought you here, what you’d like to work on, and any goals you have. You can also ask me questions and see how therapy feels for you.

  • It depends on your child’s age, needs, and what we’re working on. For younger children, I usually spend some time with both you and your child together, and some time with you separately to talk through strategies and support. For older children and teens, they often benefit from having their own private space, but I’ll always check in with you and keep you involved in the process.

The goal is to make sure both you and your child feel supported and on the same page.

  • Yes — babies are very welcome in the therapy room. We can work flexibly with little ones present and can continue our work while you feed or settle your baby/s.

However, please note that the clinic is up a short flight of stairs and is not pram-accessible.

  • Yes. Sessions can be held via telehealth (phone or secure video) if you’re unable to attend in person. Many people find online sessions convenient and just as helpful as face-to-face therapy. Telehealth is also a great option if you live further away.

If you have a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP), Medicare rebates apply to telehealth sessions in the same way as in-person appointments.

Rivers know this: there is no hurry.
We shall get there someday.

Fees, Payments and Cancellations

  • Therapy

    Session Fee
The fee for both in-person and Telehealth therapy sessions is $250 per 50 min session.

    Reduced Fee
There are a limited quantity of reduced fee sessions available for those with financial difficulties ($190 per session).

Access to these sessions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

    Assessments

Please refer to the Assessments page for an approximate cost for an assessment. The fee may differ depending on what is required for the assessment and if you have had assessments completed previously.

    Supervision

The fee for both in-person and telehealth supervision sessions is $220 per 50-60 min session.

  • Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP)

If you see your GP or psychiatrist for a Mental Health Care Plan, you’ll be eligible for a Medicare rebate of $145.20 per session for up to 10 sessions each calendar year.

    DVA (Department of Veterans’ Affairs)

If you’re a military veteran, DVA will cover the cost of mental health treatment through a 12-session allied health cycle, with referrals made by your GP.

    NDIS (Self-Managed)

Services at AP Psychology can be accessed if you are self-managing or plan-managing your NDIS funds. In these cases, you can use your funding to pay for therapy sessions directly. AP Psychology is not a registered provider through NDIS.

    Private Health Funds

You’re also welcome to book as a full-fee paying client without a referral. This option allows flexibility and privacy.

Some private health funds offer rebates for psychology sessions. After each session, you will be sent an invoice, which you can then submit directly to your health fund. Rebates depend on your level of cover.

  • When appointments are booked, the clinician reserves the whole time especially for you. To respect this, the following cancellation policy is in place:

We require 48 business hours’ notice to reschedule or cancel a session without incurring fees. This allows us to offer the time to another client who may be waiting.

    Cancellation fees:

    • 0–24 hours’ notice: Full fee applies

    • 24–48 hours’ notice: 50% of the fee applies

If we are able to reallocate your appointment time to another client, you will not be charged.

Please note that cancellation fees are not eligible for rebates through Medicare, private health funds, DVA, or NDIS, and must be paid at your own expense.

If you are unable to attend in person, you may choose to have your session via telehealth (phone or video). This can often be a helpful alternative and avoids the need for cancellation fees.

You may call our office at any time, including after hours, and leave a message on our answering service. We will return your call as soon as possible.

A late cancellation impacts three people:

    • The client who is delaying their therapy progress

    • Another client who may be waiting for an appointment

    • The clinician who has prepared for the session

  • Payment is on the day of your appointment by EFTPOs, credit card, cash, bank transfer or PayID. All credit and EFTPOs payments will incur a 1.1% surcharge.

Getting Here

  • Due to the presence of a stairs to access our clinic, the clinic is not wheelchair-accessible at the moment. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and will be happy to discuss alternative arrangements with you.

  • There is paid street parking outside the clinic.
